Murtala Muhammed Foundation

The Murtala Muhammed Foundation has been benefitting lives across States in Nigeria and the African continent. Through its programs, millions of lives have been touched in positive ways, particularly the underprivileged, poor, marginalized, and vulnerable in society.

The Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF) dates back to 1991. The Foundation was founded in honor and memorial of the late General Murtala Muhammed, Nigeria Head of State (1975-1976), following his assassination on February 13, 1976. The late General was a nationalist and Pan-Africanist who stood for the masses and his short reign in office as Head of State witnessed key transformations in the country.

The Murtala Muhammed Foundation was founded by consensus of the family in furtherance of the late General Murtala to improve the lives of the underprivileged in Africa and entrench good governance, virtues which the late General stood for.

Much of the initial work of the Foundation concentrated on launching actions aimed at strengthening leadership, accountability, good governance to enhance the well-being of the poor. The Murtala Muhammed Foundation, as it is today, was inaugurated in 2001 and launched on February 13, 2002, a day that coincided with the 26 Anniversary of General Murtala Muhammed’s assassination. Prior to the launch of the MMF, the only event through which the General’s memory was kept alive was the Murtala Muhammed memorial Lectures.

THE MMF MANDATE

The mandate of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation has grown and flourished in lips and bounds. The Foundation has restructured its focus and expanded its reach to programs for more people and communities in need.

Today, the MMF has reached the six geo-political zones in Nigeria, where it continues to scale up its footprints of high-impact results in intervening in empowerment, leadership, and governance, social solutions that range from education, digital literacy, computer for schools, capacity and skill development, humanitarian response, mentorship for women, entrepreneurship, women in development enterprise across Africa, entrepreneurship, among other important intervention areas.

Central to the success of the Foundation is the role of people over the decade who has invested their time and energy in providing interventions to generate practical, tangible, on-the-ground benefits that address the felt needs of the people we served. Among these people include companies and good-spirited individuals. The dedication of staff and disposition of the board of Trustees have provided value added in steering the outputs of the Foundation since 2001.
